Data acquisition solutions

Scanmatic offers a wide range of data acquisition solutions used in many different applications by the energy sector. The solutions usually consist of one or several data acquisition units (DAU), equipped with one or several sensors measuring different physical parameters. A data acquisition system (DAS) is often also included, collecting data from the different DAUs. The DAS can be a standalone system or subtending a top-level system e.g. SCADA.

Scanmatic is a vendor independent system integrator offering, internally developed DAUs or in-sourced DAU units from several leading suppliers, to be able to provide the best solution for the end user.

Several DAU technologies exist and the most relevant DAU are listed below:

  • Datalogger
  • Intelligent Electronic Device (IED)
  • Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)
  • Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)
  • Embedded PC
  • IO controller


The DAU communicates with the DAS or a top-level system e.g. SCADA. The communication solution can be based on legacy serial interfaces like RS232, RS485 or RS422 or modern packet-based interfaces based on the different versions of Ethernet.

Proprietary communication protocols are often used between the DAS and the DAU. The communication protocol between the DAS and a top-level system is usually a standard protocol like IEC 60870-5-101, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP.

The data acquisition solution handles present and historical values, messages and commands. The measurements are stored locally in the DAU, before they are regularly transferred to the DAS. The DAS supports regular polling and spontaneous reception of data from the DAU.

The DAU synchronizes the real time clock in the DAU to provide a common understanding of time for all systems.

Sensors are connected to the DAU via legacy analog interfaces e.g. 4-20 mA loops, or via modern digital interfaces based on Modbus or SDI-12. Proprietary protocols, typically based on ASCII, are often used between the sensor and the DAU. Digital inputs and digital outputs are used for controlling of external equipment and for transferring messages and commands to legacy systems.

The solution is powered from one or several power sources e.g. mains supply and battery, or solar panels and battery.

The components are typically installed in a cabinet optimized for the specific application and its environment.
